A fine romance - the week so far

I was talking to a friend the other day, and it dawned on me after our conversation that I had spent a good part of the hour complaining about the injustice of a single event. A single, unfair, unjust event that had occurred in the two weeks since we last spoke. A single event out of very many; most of them so ordinary in their generosity and life-affirming capabilities I hadn't seen fit to notice, because well, perhaps the ordinary is mandate.

I urge you to notice when you are happy

Kurt Vonnegut

It made me wonder, not for the first time, what life really is about? Choices, I realised. The choice to be happy or gloomy, positive or cynical, unreasonably optimistic or sceptical of everything. A great many things happened in those two weeks. Granted, not earth-shuttering, but then again why were they not? Had I missed my chance to make a great-ado about them? I'd wager! To be happy is to accept things for what they are, to choose carefully what to dwell on and to celebrate even the tiniest of pleasures and victories.

And I realised, I choose to celebrate! I choose to make merry.

So here's my gratitude journal to life, my little thank you note, a fine love letter for the romance it offers me daily. A rose scented garden in the English summer, air so thick with perfume it intoxicates you, leaving you light and carefree.

The top three moments from this week that have made me stop and think "if this isn't nice, I don't know what is":

  1. Erik Satie's Gymnopedie No.1,
  2. an epsom salt bath,
  3. a vidoecall with a girlfriend in Holland, and
  4. the gorgeous Soleil Tan from Chanel.
